A snow-covered farm field in Iowa became the site of an environmental nightmare last week after a natural gas pipeline ruptured, spewing 46,830 gallons of diesel fuel into the cold winter air.
It was initially reported that 138,600 gallons of fuel had pooled on the field, making the incident the largest US diesel spill since 2010. The inflated estimate was intended to ensure an adequate response to the pipeline leak, a spokesman for the oil company said in a news release.
